RAMON FOSSATI
Trombone - Composer - Arranger
Born in Barcelona and based in Paris, Ramon Fossati is a trombonist, composer and arranger.
Fossati begins his career as a guitarist, debuting in Barcelona in 1986. In 1989 he moves to Paris, where he founds and directs, together with vibraphonist Oriol Bordas, the Paris-Barcelona Swing Connection, a nonet that impacts Europe with 4 albums and more than 500 concerts between 1990 and 1995.
After this intense period as a guitarist, composer and producer, his career was marked by a turning point. Fossati discovers in the trombone the instrument that fully meets his expressive needs. Its versatility, lyricism and its wide timbre possibilities absolutely attracts him and he decides to devote himself to the trombone.
Throughout his career he has taken part in many and diverse projects and has collaborated with musicians Frank Wess, Wild Bill Davis, Teddy Edwards, Liz McComb, Nicholas Payton, Jan Harrington, Patrick Artero, Pédron, Ron Meza, Damon Brown, Barcelona Jazz Orchestra and tenora player Jordi Molina, among others.
He combines his activity with his bands:
– French-Catalan quintet Five in Orbit, co-led by Laurent Bronner and Olivier Brandily.
– Ramon Fossati Glowing Trio, presenting an original repertoire conceived to enjoy the great expressive resources of the trombone, together with two great jazz masters: double bassist Horacio Fumero and drummer David Xirgu.
– Barcelona Jazz Septet, an intergenerational ensemble that Ramon Fossati co-directs with drummer Enrique Heredia.
Other Fossati’s projects are Ramon Fossati Sextet, with Ronald Baker; the quintet Ramon Fossati, Toni Solà & Ignasi Terraza Trio and Jean-Pierre Derouard Big Band, where he also collaborates as an arranger.
Noteworthy were his performances at the Vienna Jazz Festival, at EuroDjango Jazz Awards, Enderrock award to best jazz album in 2007 for ‘The Black Key’ and South American tour in November 2012 with the Ramon Fossati Glowing Trio.
Ramon Fossati is currently professor of trombone, repertoire and arrangements for Big Band at the IMEP Paris College of Music, www.imep.pro, where he is also co-director of the Big Band.
He also directs the parisian amateur Big Band BB15: www.bb15.org
