Toni Solà, tenor sax Ramon Fossati, trombone Ignasi Terraza, piano Jules Bikoko, double bass Jean-Pierre Derouard, drums
The Black Key is the latest album by this formation, remarkably homogeneous and full of freshness. Ramon Fossati and Toni Solà, accompanied by one of the most prestigious trios of our country headed by Ignasi Terraza, present this project, which is the result of their musical complicity. With a wise combination of standard and original themes, this spectacular quintet offers us a surprising and virtuous repertoire, rich in contrasts and colours.
A project where musicians are identified with the spirit that moved Art Blakey or Horace Silver, among others, to try to reintegrate in their music the “keys” that gave strength and identity to the Afro-American culture in the 1950s.
This spirit brings Fossati, Solá and Terraza today to dive back into blues, gospel or New Orleans marches to enrich their music with new experiences and rediscover a tradition that fascinates them.
The Black Key won the Enderrock Award to best jazz album in 2007.
“The Black Key’ by Ramon Fossati, Toni Solà and Ignasi Terraza Trio, is the most exciting Catalan jazz proposal.” Pere Pons, Diari Avui
“We’re far from a servile ‘revival’ because their rhythmical vigour combines with an original theme and, most of it, with such a salutary sound expression: saxophonist’s ‘blues shooter’ playing and trombonist Ramon Fossati’s impressive mastery reminds us of Mingu’s textures but also Carla Bley’s medium formations during 1980s-90s. A really promising band.” Stéphane Carini, Jazzman
